Woolworths drops HD DVD

29 Jan 2008 14:00

The retailers move could prove significant HD DVD was dealt another serious blow this week in the high definition (HD) format war as Woolworths announced it would now stock only Blu-ray discs.

The retailer has blamed falling HD DVD sales and the success of Sony's Blu-ray compatible Playstation 3 as the reason it will no longer sell the discs and according to the firm's DVD buyer, Steve McGuinel, reflects the needs of the general public.

"Sales figures clearly show that the market is moving towards one format of high definition DVD … Switching to Blu-ray only, will provide one clear offer to customers in the format they want to watch high definition movies in," he said.

The decision follows a move by Warner Bros earlier this month to publish all future video releases in Blu-ray only and is being seen as another blow for Toshiba's troubled format.

Commenting on the news in an article for the Trusted Reviews website, Hugo Jobling states that it is encouraging to see Woolworths taking a stand of the format war adding that the decision could be "a big one".
