Blu-ray Association to welcome Microsoft and Toshiba Following the announcement that PC firm Acer has gone Blu, Sony has said that it would warmly welcome both Microsoft and Toshiba into the Blu-ray Association.

The firm was questioned by Pocket-Lint at IFA in Berlin and it confirmed that it would "love" it if both companies switched over from HD DVD to the Blu-ray camp.

Don Eklund, executive vice president of advanced technologies, said: "We would love to have Toshiba and Microsoft on board."

AT the IFA event, Toshiba announced that it would be lowering the price of a selection of its stand alone HD DVD players as well as some of its laptops with HD DVD drives in an apparent bid to win over consumers.

However, Sony has asserted that price-dropping is not a marketing strategy that will work in the long-term, and that Blu-ray will win out in the end.

Eklund added: "Tosh can't keep dropping prices much more. It maybe a strategy for fighting a format war, but for us it has to be profitable.

"When it comes to investing in a state of the art entertainment system with HD-Ready television and surround sound system, having to spend a bit extra to get Blu-ray, we feel, isn't going to drive customers away. It's the bigger picture we are looking at."
