Super-thin TVs from Sharp
24 Jan 2008 15:47Televisions measuring less than four centimetres deep are being launched in Japan by Sharp.
Aquos X-series models are 3.44 cm at their narrowest point and 3.85 cm at their widest - less than half the depth of two other Sharp LCDs also launched today by the manufacturer.
The tuner unit has been extracted from the main screen via a video player-sized box and the screens themselves come in 37, 42 and 47-inch screens.
Customers in Japan will pay 480,000 yen (£2,250) for the largest screen when it is launched in March.
Sharp has not announced a date for the products rest-of-world launch and has stated it believes LCD televisions will be 60 inches in size by 2015, though not specifying depth.
Sharp product manager at Aquos Tommaso Monetto said: "People can now expect a home cinema experience from their TV and technology that was once associated with the rich and famous is now accessible to homes across the country."
