More LCDs from Samsung to meet demand

Samsung is going to put more cash into its LCD business Samsung Electronics has today (Thursday, November 22nd) announced plans to up its spending on liquid crystal display panels in a bid to meet consumer demand for LCD TVs.

The South Korean company has revealed that it will pour KRW2.06 trillion (£1 billion) into the technology next year.

It added that the money would go towards developing its panels for eighth-generation 46-inch and 52-inch televisions, the Associated Press reports.

The firm believes that the 50-inch and above segment of the flatscreen TV market will experience annual increases of 65 per cent over the next three years.

"The expansion will help cement our leadership in the fast-growing large-sized flat TV market," said the company in a statement.

Samsung is currently the world's largest producer of LCD panels, which it makes through a joint venture with Japanese firm Sony, known as S-LCD Corp. However, Samsung has made it clear that it will be making this new investment alone.
