HD DVD player sales going up and up
27 Nov 2007 15:00Sales of HD DVD players have topped 750,000, the North American HD DVD Promotional Group has said.
According to the organisation, there has been a recent increase in sales which can be attributed to price cuts, with some selling for $200 (£100), while the cheapest Blu-ray player, the Sony BDP-S300, sells for around $499 (£250).
Several US retailers recently dropped the price of the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player, which saw sales of the machine jump to over 100,000 units in one week.
Commenting on the surge in popularity of HD DVD players, Ken Graffeo, co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group, said: "HD DVD continues to gain momentum and market share with consumers.
"With more than four weeks left for holiday shopping, HD DVD is turning out to be a perfect consumer electronics gift."
The group has claimed that more standalone HD DVD players are being sold than standalone Blu-ray players - although the Playstation 3, which is Blu-ray compliant, continues to sell extremely well.
