Average LCD screen size 'set to grow'

03 Jan 2008 17:16

Home screens are set to get bigger Sharp has forecast that over the next seven years the average LCD TV size for homes in Europe will grow to around 60 inches as flat panel screen sales continue to grow.

According to Vnunet.com, the Japanese manufacturer said that by 2015 consumers will move on from 2007's most popular size, the 42-inch screen, as bigger panels begin to move out of the shop window and into the living room.

Mike Gabriel, head of marketing and communications for Sharp Electronics, told the website that the impending digital switchover, more high definition content and lower prices would continue to see the big screen market thrive.

"Big screens are no longer for just shop windows or shiny office receptions. The demand for HD-ready 1080p picture quality in the home has led to an increase in the affordability and availability of larger TVs," he said.

Tom Reddoch, director of energy efficiency for the Electric Power Research Institute, told treehugger.com this week that he was increasingly concerned about consumers buying large screens without checking on the amount of energy they consume.
